If you have read any of my blog entries, you may have come to the conclusion that I am a smart-alec, with some of my comments. I  take that as a compliment. Mr Groucho Marx was also a smart-alec, who made far, far, far more money making sarcastic comments than what I'm making writing these blog entries. Millions of dollars compared to ZERO. I'm sure you are all thinking the same thing at the exact same moment, GROUCHO IS TALENTED & I'M NOT!!!! Well, you said the secret word, and you win $10. Congratulations.

Groucho was a spokesman for Desoto cars. The car manufacturer was the sponsor for his TV show, You Bet Your Life. His show allowed him to showcase his quick wit. Since the program was on live TV, it allowed him to say things, without receiving a fist in the mouth. People loved to be the subject of his biting comments. He was also able to seamlessly communicate with his guests and at the same time, constantly promoting the Desoto automobile. He was a true master at his craft.

Below is a magazine ad for the 1955 Desoto. In my opinion, a gorgeous automobile. Those were the days when the designer had the first say on the look of the car, as opposed to the engineer, who has the first, second and third say, on the design of today's, 4-wheel, movable, aerodynamic, tiny, rectangular boxes. 



THAT IS A GOOD LOOKING CAR!!!

Below are two segments of Groucho's TV show, You Bet Your Life. The first show is from 1952 and is quite humorous. Groucho is offering money to a young man for the opportunity to kiss his fiancee, who is standing between Groucho and the young man. First it was one dollar, then five dollars, & it was raised to ten smackers. By the time it hit $10, he was tempted as he whispered in his girlfriends ear. His response, "Is that your highest offer?" MONEY CAN BUY ANYTHING.






The second video segment, is another episode of You Bet Your Life. Groucho is advertising the 1955 Desoto, with closeup photos of the car. Groucho's guests are strangers to each other, but make great guests because of their willingness to put up with Groucho's silliness. Groucho is able to joke with them and provide the audience with a lot of entertainment.
