TONY THE TIGER WAS A DUD - COULDN'T PROMOTE BANANA FROSTED FLAKES
For the incredibly lazy child, who didn't have the energy to slice or pull apart a banana and then put it on top of their cereal, Kellogg's came out with Banana Frosted Flakes, in 1981. It was a yellow box with a huge picture of Tony the "Child Eating" Tiger, gracing the front. I'm kidding, Tony the T. would never do that, he was a herbivore. The T. was a sweetheart and wanted only the best for his young friends. It was a beautifully designed box and was very eye-catching.
I assume the reasons for its ultimate failure were many. In my humble opinion, as a consumer of cereal, it was C**P. It was Frosted Flakes with freeze dried banana bits. Ohhh boy, that sounds yummy!!! No, it sounded terrible. The cereal didn't last long on the grocery shelf.
I feel that it is fantastic that Kellogg's, and other companies, will constantly attempt to be innovative and come up with a new product that might turn out to be GRRRREAT. Yeah, they failed, so what. The company could have been successful. You can't hit a home run, if you are trying to hit a bunt.
As a collector of Pop Culture, it is a fantastic example of our American Pop Culture history. It is definitely beautiful art. If an image of a Campbell's soup can is considered to be good enought to be hanging in an art gallery, then this cereal box is good enought to be framed and hanging on your wall. TV Toy Memories has an unused Banana Frosted Flakes box, if you wish more information, please click the picture.
