Johnny Carson was always willing to show his "supposed" incompetence. Granted it was all a show, it was a method to produce humor. It made him appear to be a "Joe Six-pack," to all of the "Joe Six-packs" watching him on TV. You know the kind, guys and gals sitting in their living rooms, wearing nothing but their underwear. I don't think you need me to continue the description, do you? I'm sure you can visualize the beer-bellied slob sitting on the couch. If they could identify with Carson, he will become a comic relief for them. They can't laugh at somebody they feel is superior to them, they can laugh at somebody they feel is equal, or less than equal. That is what made Carson a STAR. The willingness to play the role of a goof.

Prior to The Tonight Show, Carson was the star of Who Do You Trust. The sponsor was JELL-O. Johnny was doing a live commercial for a Jello desert and was having problems making it. I have uploaded the commercial, for your entertainment.
