MAGAZINE AD FROM 1957 CLAIMS WE WILL HAVE ELECTRIC SUPER HIGHWAYS IN THE NEAR FUTURE - YEAH, RIGHT!!!

During the 1950's, Americans were constantly being barraged with stories about a supposed utopian lifestyle that was going to be ours for the taking. Stories about INCREDIBLY cheap electricity were a common storyline.

In this magazine ad, from 1957, an orginization named America's Independent Electric Light and Power Companies, claimed we would be enjoying the wonders of electrically controlled superhighways. The embedded devices in the roadway would control the speed and steering of all of the vehicles on the highway.

I drive long distances and I could have really use that luxury. I recently had to drive to Atlanta from Chicago, it would of been nice to take a nap while the vehicle drove itself. When exactly is that going to take place? Oh, yeah, I remember now. It will happen sometime between fifty years and never.
