TRIBUTE TO UNDERWOOD DEVILED HAM
I like trying famous pop culture food products, so that I can write about it on this blog. I might be trying it for the first time in my life, or I might rediscover a "forgotten" item. For this blog, I've tried Tang for the first time in my life, and I've retried a can of condensed Campbell's chicken noodle soup. Tang received a grade of A-. The other item would receive a D- grade (incredibly insignificant amounts of chicken & vegetables.)
Once again, I'm giving my opinion of a classic food product.
I have never tried Underwood Deviled Ham - UNTIL NOW. It was OK. Nothing to write home about. I could stretch the critique out, but why should I do that. Like I said, it was OK. I do find it amazing that the packaging is almost identical to what it was 57 years ago.
Posted below is a photo that I took of my deviled ham sandwich (Hey, stop yawning. It isn't that boring) with the 2011 packaging, and I also posted a 1954 magazine ad with a similar label. I guess they feel that if it is successful then don't change it.
On the 1954 magazine ad, they proudly proclaim that Underwood Deviled Ham is America's favorite spread for 87 years. That is incredible. how many pop culture food products have lasted for 144 years? Somebody out there has a higher opinion of the product than I do. An OK opinion wouldn't keep the product on the grocery shelf for 144 years. Even with my new found respect for the product, I still have to give it a C+ grade.
