JUST BECAUSE IDEAL TOYS SAID THEIR TOY TRUCKS WERE TOUGH & USED MEAN JOE GREENE AS A SPOKESMAN, DIDN'T MAKE IT SO.
There are Tonka trucks from the 50's that are still entertaining kids today. Those all metal toy trucks were truly indestructible. By the late 70's, all of the toy companies were making toys out of plastic. The metal toy truck was dead. High quality wasn't needed. Just the same, as a toy collector - I WOULD KILL FOR A MINT CONDITION (NON REFURBISHED) 1950s Tonka truck. Personally, I could care less about Ideal Toy Company's line of Mighty Mo trucks. I have to admit, they did have great advertising.
Mean Joe Greene was the spokesman for the line of tough plastic toy trucks. They used an old standby advertising trick - the use of a well known tough guy celebrity to "pass" his toughness off on the endorsed product. In this case, it didn't work for me.
They also had catchy music playing on their TV commercials. Once again, YAWN. Give me a TOUGH TONKA truck any day.
