HENRY MORGAN (PANELIST ON "I'VE GOT A SECRET") HAD THE TYPE OF SARCASTIC HUMOR THAT I LOVE
I only knew Henry Morgan from his appearances on I've Got A Secret, and other panel game shows. Prior to his reincarnation as a game show personality, he was a big star on radio and TV. The Henry Morgan Show was a big hit because Morgan would make fun of the sponsor of his show. Some of the sponsors had a sense of humor, and others did not.
Lifesavers was one of the sponsors that couldn't comprehend that Henry Morgan's Lifesavers jokes were extremely beneficial to their bottom line. Henry accused the company of cheating the public by selling candy with missing pieces (the hole in the middle.) Henry proffered the idea about selling the middle pieces, and calling them Morgan's Mints. A rather tame jab, if I do say so. Just the same, the company canceled it's sponsorship as soon as he left the air. ANAL RETENTIVE CORPORATE EXECUTIVE TO THE EXTREME.

On another occasion, Henry was promoting the product of a major razor manufacturer. The comedy bit was called a "shave-a-thon," where he used audience members in shaving races. The sponsor's product was matched up with their competitor's razor. After the sponsor's product would win the race, Morgan would then tell the audience several terrible tragic stories of maiming & death. Because the users of the product had so much extra time on their hands, they were supposedly performing dangerous feats with the razor. Hence, the maiming and death stories.

Henry Morgan was the 1940's & 1950's version of David Letterman. Of course, I'm talking about the years prior to Letterman becoming an "old man." As a side note, one of my favorite Letterman stunts was when he wore a suit of Alka Seltzer tablets and jumped into a pool of water.
