A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PEG & B.J. HUNNICUTT, A FEW YEARS BEFORE HIS DRAFT NOTICE ARRIVED
No, this is not a documentary on a TV character's life. I'm just being silly. This is a TV commercial, which is showcasing a young pre-M*A*S*H TV actor. Mike Farrell (B. J. Hunnicutt) is doing a TV commercial for Kool cancer sticks.
The ad was from late 1968, and by the time the ad aired Mike had only done about a dozen insignificant TV roles. One of those roles was an uncredited performance of playing a bellhop, in the movie The Graduate.
The timing of the commercial was perfect, if you assume that his character was drafted into the Korean War sometime between 1968 and 1972, instead of 1950 - 1953, when the war really took place. The young couple is shown visiting their new house while it is being constructed, and the wife (Peg Hunnicutt ?) asks for a Kool cancer stick to suck on. This TV ad, from October, 1968, could be showing a young Peg and B. J. Hunnicutt, a few years before the Korean War draft notice arrives.
It is possible - IN THE TWILIGHT ZONE.
Sometimes, I feel like I really do live in the Twilight Zone.
I hope you enjoy this classic piece of pop culture history, I'm betting that Mike won't enjoy it. I have met Mike Farrell on three occasions, and I have seen his hard work on liberal causes, I would assume that he would have loved to have never done this TV commercial. Just my opinion.
