A TRIBUTE TO THE GREAT TIM CONWAY (WHILE HE IS STILL ALIVE)
Everybody loved Tim Conway on the classic CBS show, The Carol Burnett Show, and also on the syndicated TV show Mama's Family. His deadpan humor was incredible. Few people were capable of withstanding the onslaught of Tim's incredibly inane comments. Harvey Korman was the perfect foil / straight man for Tim's vicious dead pan humor attacks. Harvey was incapable of resisting Mr. Conway's "moronic" humor attacks.
I saw Tim Conway's and Harvey Korman's stage show in Milwaukee, about 7 years ago. It was an incredibly nostalgic and funny evening. All of the old Tim Conway characters, from the Carol Burnett Show, were brought back to entertain the audience, for at least one more time.
After the show, I attempted to get Tim Conway's autograph. Tim was very willing, and loved to play the audience, no matter if the audience was only a couple of people outside a stage door. An audience is an audience - he lives to entertain. On the other hand, Harvey seemed to be deathly afraid of personal contact with his fans. While Tim was schmoozing with the fans, Harvey was lurking inside the building, and waiting until the last possible second to run outside, and then pop into the limo. He wouldn't stop in his quest to avoid the fans.
I tried meeting Harvey a second time. Harvey & Tim were appearing in Aurora, Illinois, and Harvey went throught the same scaredy cat routine of waiting for the last possible second to jump into the limo. I desperately wanted Harvey to sign an 8X10 closeup photo of Hedy Lamarr's Hollywood Walk of Fame star. In case you don't remember, Harvey played the character HEDLEY LAMARR, in the movie Blazing Saddles. His character always had to correct people by saying that his name was HEDLEY. I figured he would get a kick out of the photograph. Alas, we will never know. Harvey passed away on May 29, 2008. Harvey was born in Chicago, and Chicagoans are not like that. That Los Angeles smog changed him.
Tim Conway ended his stage show for a few years after Harvey died. Harvey was the second stage partner to pass away in a very small amount of time. Tim also had been doing a stage show with Don Knotts (his movie co-star from several films.)
Luckily for Tim's fans, he has activated his creative juices, and is currently on the road again. On Saturday, September 24, 2011, Tim will be performing in Mason City, IA. The following day, he will move down the road to Cedar Falls, Iowa. If you ever get a chance to see this very funny man - PLEASE DO IT. You will not regret it.
I have posted a few You Tube videos for your enjoyment. The first one is an outtake from Mama's Family. Tim has everybody attempting to hide their laughter. The funny thing is, Vicki Lawrence tops Tim using only one line. The second video pairs Tim up with Harvey Korman for Fruit & Fibre cereal.
